Rona Wakeman

The look on my husband’s face, when I told him I wanted to raise $2,500.00 and ride 200+ k’s in 2 days …. priceless!  I’m not sure what he was most apprehensive about, the fundraising target or the thought of me on a bike?  It was November 2010, I was 44 years old, recovering from breast reconstruction surgery and hadn’t ridden a bike since my early teens.  I was quite unfit, but I was determined, I just wanted to do this ride.  I’d had enough of the many effects of cancer treatment, as well as it taking charge of my life with treatments, appointments and fatigue, I wanted the old me back and it was time to move on.  So, I encouraged a friend to register for the ride with me and got to work on my fundraising.  Then it was time to get on the bike, my first ride was 5 k’s, O.M.G, I had plenty of room for improvement!!!!  But if I could deal with a mastectomy, chemo, radiation & breast reconstruction surgery, I could deal with 200 k’s, one pedal at a time.

Although I’m not an athlete & I’m still a novice rider, I’ve participated in the 2011 & 2012 Brisbane Ride to Conquer Cancer.  It’s one hell of a journey, both physically & mentally but extremely rewarding too.  Cancer has changed my life dramatically, it picked my life up and shook it around for a while there, but now it’s my turn to kick cancer’s butt.  Dollars for research = goodbye cancer, please get on board and help this worthy cause.

This year however, I'v taken on the Grand Slam challenge, I'm aiming for 6 rides across Australia & New Zealand, that's Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Auckland & Adelaide!
